In which John Green teaches you about founding father and third president of the United States, Thomas Jefferson. Jefferson is a somewhat controversial figure in American history, largely because he, like pretty much all humans, was a big bundle of contradictions. Jefferson was a slave-owner who couldn't decide if he liked slavery. He advocated for small government, but expanded federal power more than either of his presidential predecessor. He also idealized the independent farmer and demonized manufacturing, but put policies in place that would expand industrial production in the US. Controversy may ensue as we try to deviate a bit from the standard hagiography/slander story that usually told about old TJ. John explores Jefferson's election, his policies, and some of the new nation's (literally and figuratively) formative events that took place during Jefferson's presidency. In addition to all this, Napoleon drops in to sell Louisiana, John Marshall sets the course of the Supreme Court, and John Adams gets called a tiny tyrant. http://democracynow.org - Tensions between the United States and Venezuela are increasing after the Obama administration declared Venezuela to be an "unusual and extraordinary threat to national security" and slapped sanctions on seven top officials for alleged human right violations and corruption. On Tuesday, Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro asked the National Assembly for increased power to protect the country's integrity and sovereignty from what he described as "imperialist aggression." Relations between the United States and Venezuela have been decaying for the past few months. In December, President Obama signed legislation to impose sanctions on Venezuelan government officials accused of violating protesters' rights during demonstrations last year when 43 people died, including demonstrators, government supporters and security officials. On February 19, the mayor of Caracas, Antonio Ledezma, was arrested for allegedly being involved in a U.S.-backed coup plot. Days later, Venezuela announced it had arrested an unspecified number of Americans for engaging in espionage and recruitment activities. Venezuela also announced a series of measures, including visa requirements for U.S. citizens and restrictions and the downsizing of the U.S. Embassy in Caracas. This all comes as Venezuela faces an economic crisis in part because of the plummeting price of oil. We are joined by Miguel Tinker Salas, professor at Pomona College and author of the forthcoming book, "Venezuela: What Everyone Needs to Know." 'The War On Democracy' (2007) was John Pilger's first for cinema. It explores the current and past relationship of Washington with Latin American countries such as Venezuela, Bolivia and Chile. Using archive footage sourced by Michael Moore's archivist Carl Deal, the film shows how serial US intervention, overt and covert, has toppled a series of legitimate governments in the Latin American region since the 1950s. The democratically elected Chilean government of Salvador Allende, for example, was ousted by a US backed coup in 1973 and replaced by the military dictatorship of General Pinochet. Guatemala, Panama, Nicaragua, Honduras and El Salvador have all been invaded by the United States. John Pilger interviews several ex-CIA agents who took part in secret campaigns against democratic countries in the region. He investigates the School of the Americas in the US state of Georgia, where Pinochet's torture squads were trained along with tyrants and death squad leaders in Haiti, El Salvador, Brazil and Argentina. The film unearths the real story behind the attempted overthrow of Venezuela's President Hugo Chávez in 2002 and how the people of the barrios of Caracas rose up to force his return to power. It also looks at the wider rise of populist governments across South America lead by indigenous leaders intent on loosening the shackles of Washington and a fairer redistribution of the continent's natural wealth. John Pilger says: "[The film] is about the struggle of people to free themselves from a modern form of slavery". These people, he says, "describe a world not as American presidents like to see it as useful or expendable, they describe the power of courage and humanity among people with next to nothing. They reclaim noble words like democracy, freedom, liberation, justice, and in doing so they are defending the most basic human rights of all of us in a war being waged against all of us." 'The War On Democracy' was a Youngheart Entertainment, Granada and Michael Watt production. It was released in UK cinemas on 15 June 2007 and broadcast on ITV1, 20 August 2007. Awards: Best Documentary Award, 2008 One World Awards, London. The panel's citation read: "There are six criteria the judges are asked to use to select the winner of this award: the film's impact on public opinion, its appeal to a wide audience, its inclusion of voices from the developing world, its high journalistic or production standards, its success in conveying the impact of the actions of the world's rich on the lives of the poor and the extent to which it draws attention to possible solutions. One film met every one of these. It was the winner of the award: John Pilger's 'The War on Democracy'." _____________________________________________________ Source: www.johnpilger.com

Negative experiences from state-building projects in Iraq and Afghanistan, the mixed record of democratic change in the former Soviet Union and the aftermath of Arab Spring have led many to question the efficacy of democracy promotion. Some argue that Western democracy support is ineffective at its best and counterproductive at its worst. Is there a case for continuing efforts to encourage transitions to democracy? The unresolved Ukraine crisis has heightened the importance of this question. Taking stock of democracy promotion over the past 30 years, what are its strengths and weaknesses? If U.S. and European democracy promotion should be continued, how can it be better targeted and reformed to more effectively advance democratization in post-authoritarian societies? If such assistance programs deserve to be terminated, should there be alternative policies to support human rights and other aspects of pluralism? This event is co-sponsored by the Foreign Policy Research Institute.

"The incoming Senate is comprised mostly of Republicans -- 54 to the Democrats' 44 (plus two independents, who hang out/vote with Democrats). But those Democrats actually received 20 million more cumulative votes than did the Republicans, as Vox pointed out (to much Internet traffic, no doubt) over the weekend. What gives? As is the way with online writing, we were beaten to a more-thorough analysis by Real Clear Politics' Sean Trende, who outlines very neatly the ways in which the apparent contrast between popular support and Senate power isn't actually a big deal. (Certainly not suggestive, as Vox's Dylan Matthews offered, of the need to abolish the Senate.) But it's still worth another look at the numbers. Here's one way of looking at them: Democratic senators got 20 million more votes than the Republicans. (Vox conflates those independent senators with the Democrats, which is a bit of a cheat but doesn't really matter since those senators are in the tiny states of Maine and Vermont.)"* The Young Turks host Cenk Uygur breaks it down. *Read more here: http://www.washingtonpost.com/blogs/the-fix/wp/2015/01/05/senate-democrats-got-20-million-more-votes-than-senate-republicans-which-means-basically-nothing/ Support TYT for FREE by doing your Amazon shopping through this link (bookmark it!) http://www.amazon.com/?tag=theyoungturks-20

Years of US foreign policy blunders have led to the Obama Administration’s strategy of leading from behind. And while the country has been reluctant to accept shared decision-making on global affairs, the realities of the post-Cold War period have been forcing it to adapt. How is the faltering superpower adjusting to a multi-polar world, and can it learn to relate to partners on a more equal footing? Oksana is joined by Joel Migdal, author and Professor of International Studies at the University of Washington, to level on these issues. http://democracynow.org - Amidst outrage in Mexico over the disappearance of 43 students, we look at the U.S. role in the country's violence. According to the Center for International Policy, the United States has spent approximately $3 billion to fund the so-called war on drugs in Mexico. Since the war on drugs began under President Felipe Calderón in 2006, more than 100,000 people have been killed in drug-related violence. That includes $2.4 billion in taxpayer funds through the Merida Initiative, launched as a three-year aid program for Mexican security forces under the administration of George W. Bush. The Obama administration has extended the Merida Initiative "indefinitely." We are joined by Laura Carlsen, director of the Mexico City-based Americas Policy Program of the Center for International Policy, and journalist John Gibler. Jimmy Wales Internet Entrepreneur Founder of Wikipedia http://www.wikipedia.org/ Freedom of speech and the distribution of knowledge is the foundation of Wikipedia. Jimmy Wales predicts that the Internet will democratise developing countries by making the world 'flat,' opening markets, promoting cultural understanding and giving developing nations the resources they need to compete in the 21st century. With current total Internet usage of one billion people set to double in the next five to 10 years (with the majority of new users arising from developing nations), Wales asserts that the Internet will combat stereotypes, censorship, media control, and monopolies while simultaneously allowing citizens of developing nations to have a more prominent voice. As Wales states: ""It does not take a lot of technology to foster open dialog and debate. Even the simplest technologies like mailing lists, wikis, blogs can help a lot. What is needed mostly, I think, is more content in local languages, and support from people around the world to help others join in the global conversation."" http://democracynow.org - As nuclear talks advance before a March 31 deadline, we look at the fallout from the Republican open letter warning Iran against reaching an agreement with the United States. On Monday, a group of 47 Senate Republicans told Iran the deal could be nixed by a Republican-led Congress or future Republican president. "We will consider any agreement regarding your nuclear-weapons program that is not approved by the Congress as nothing more than an executive agreement between President Obama and Ayatollah Khamenei," they wrote. We discuss the fallout from this unprecedented letter with two guests: Hillary Mann Leverett, a former official at the National Security Council who served as a U.S. negotiator with Iran and co-authored the book "Going to Tehran: Why America Must Accept the Islamic Republic of Iran"; and Ali Gharib, a contributor to The Nation magazine. http://democracynow.org - The Obama administration is facing criticism across Latin America for leveling new sanctions against Venezuela and declaring the country an "unusual and extraordinary threat to national security." On Saturday, foreign ministers of the 12-country Union of South American Nations called for a revocation of the sanctions. In a statement, the ministers said: "It constitutes an interventionist threat to sovereignty and the principle of non-interference in the internal affairs of other countries." On Thursday, U.S. policy in Venezuela was also questioned during a meeting of the Organization of American States in Washington, D.C. Representatives from Mexico, Brazil, Colombia, Argentina and other nations all criticized the U.S. approach. We speak to Ecuadorean Foreign Minister Ricardo Patiño, who took part in the Organization of American States meeting yesterday. Ecuador has offered to mediate dialogue between the United States and Venezuela. Presented on April 7, 2000 David S. Broder, syndicated columnist, the Washington Post, and author of the new book, “Democracy Derailed: Initiative Campaigns and the Power of Money” "As disillusionment with politics and disdain for politicians grows, the initiative process is becoming common practice across the country and may eventually lead to the kind of “direct democracy” that our founding fathers feared most. Where laws were once passed by state legislatures, voters now decide directly about such controversial issues as casino gambling, assisted suicide, and medical marijuana. In his new book, Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist David Broder warns that the initiative process offers laws without the filters of government. Broder’s extensive research, including references to City Club’s own report on the initiative process in Oregon, reveals how the once well-intended ballot initiative process has seriously backfired. Broder analyzes the complex system by which millionaires and interest groups achieve their own political agendas through an industry of lawyers, consultants, ad agencies, and signature gatherers. In this important election year, David Broder is giving a wake-up call to an electorate that believes ballot measures are the purest form of direct democracy. The opposite is true, he will tell us, government by initiative is democracy’s biggest threat. "

The current Supreme Court majority reads the First Amendment as if James Madison threw a pot of ink at the wall and allowed the splatter to dictate the order and placement of the provisions of the Bill of Rights. The Court has left us with a dysfunctional democracy where money equals speech, the outcomes of most elections are gerrymandered, less than half the eligible population bothers to vote, and cynical politicians disenfranchise the weak. It doesn’t have to be this way. Read properly, Madison’s First Amendment is democracy’s best friend. Madison carefully deployed six ideas in the First Amendment for the first and (thus far) only time in human history as the chronological story of the evolution of a democratic idea, beginning with the idea’s inception in the free conscience of a citizen (the two Religion Clauses), moving to the idea’s public articulation (the Free Speech clause), then to its mass dissemination (the Free Press Clause), followed by political organization (the Assembly Clause), and culminating in formal consideration by the legislature (the Petition Clause). No document in the history of self-government before or since comes close to providing such a carefully drawn, chronological blueprint of democracy in action. It didn’t happen by accident. A democracy-friendly First Amendment is hiding in plain sight in the brilliantly ordered text and structure of James Madison’s First Amendment, if only we can recover the ability to hear Madison’s music. About the speaker: For 50 years, Professor Burt Neuborne has been one of the nation's foremost civil liberties lawyers. He has argued numerous Supreme Court cases, and has litigated literally hundreds of important constitutional cases in the state and federal courts. At the same time, Professor Neuborne has forged a national reputation as a constitutional scholar and teacher. From 1995 to 2007, he directed the legal program of the Brennan Center, focusing on efforts to reinforce American democracy and secure campaign finance reform.
Kinshasa government has said that Seven Congolese musicians detained during a raid on a pro-democracy meeting were released on Thursday, a day after four foreign activists accused of fomenting unrest were expelled. Democratic Republic of Congo's security forces arrested around 40 people - including musicians, journalists and a U.S. diplomat - last weekend in a swoop on a news conference organized by a local youth group in the capital. The arrests highlighted political tensions in Congo, where President Joseph Kabila is due to stand down at elections next year although critics believe he may look to extend his time in power. Government spokesman Lambert Mende said the musicians, who had been scheduled to perform in an outdoor concert following the event, were released on Thursday morning. http://feeds.reuters.com/~r/Reuters/worldNews/~3/bG2f9wJ_rK0/story01.htm http://www.wochit.com

A U.S. diplomat arrested at a pro-democracy meeting in Democratic Republic of Congo has been freed but the African activists detained alongside him remain in custody, Congo's government said on Monday. Security forces made around 40 arrests when they broke up a press conference in Kinshasa attended by activists, journalists and musicians, including Senegalese and Burkinabe youth leaders visiting Congolese counterparts. The arrests come at a sensitive time in Congo's politics with President Joseph Kabila due to step down next year but critics fear his camp is looking for ways to allow him to stay in power. "He was returned to the embassy late last night," Information Minister Lambert Mende said, referring to Kevin Sturr, a USAID official with the democracy and good governance programme in Congo.

Huffington Post 2015-04-09How Mass Media Culture Failed American Democracy.
noodls 2015-04-09Democracy (grecian Δημοκρατία, from δῆμος [dēmos], „Masses“, and κρατία [kratía], „Rule“, literal: Rules of the Masses) is an egalitarian form of government in which all the citizens of a nation together determine public policy, the laws and the actions of their state, requiring that all citizens (meeting certain qualifications) have an equal opportunity to express their opinion. In practice, "democracy" is the extent to which a given system approximates this ideal, and a given political system is referred to as "a democracy" if it allows a certain approximation to ideal democracy. Although no country has ever granted all its citizens (i.e. including minors) the vote, most countries today hold regular elections based on egalitarian principles, at least in theory.
The most common system that is deemed "democratic" in the modern world is parliamentary democracy in which the voting public takes part in elections and chooses politicians to represent them in a Legislative Assembly. The members of the assembly then make decisions with a majority vote. A purer form is direct democracy in which the voting public makes direct decisions or participates directly in the political process. Elements of direct democracy exist on a local level and on exceptions on national level in many countries, though these systems coexist with representative assemblies.
Thomas Jefferson (April 13, 1743 (April 2, 1743 O.S.) – July 4, 1826) was an American Founding Father, the principal author of the United States Declaration of Independence (1776) and the third President of the United States (1801–1809). At the beginning of the American Revolution, Jefferson served in the Continental Congress, representing Virginia. He then served as a wartime Governor of Virginia (1779–1781). Just after the war ended, from mid-1784 Jefferson served as a diplomat, stationed in Paris, initially as a commissioner to help negotiate commercial treaties. In May 1785, he became the United States Minister to France. He was the first United States Secretary of State (1790–1793) during the administration of President George Washington. Upon resigning his office, with his close friend James Madison he organized the Democratic-Republican Party. Elected Vice-President in 1796, under his opponent John Adams, Jefferson with Madison secretly wrote the Kentucky and Virginia Resolutions, which attempted to nullify the Alien and Sedition Acts.
Ronald Ernest "Ron" Paul (born August 20, 1935) is an American politician who has been the U.S. Representative for Texas's 14th congressional district, which includes Galveston, since 1997, and a three-time candidate for President of the United States, as a Libertarian in 1988 and as a Republican in 2008 and currently 2012. He is an outspoken critic of American foreign and monetary policies, including the Military–industrial complex and the Federal Reserve, and is known for his libertarian-leaning views, often differing from his own party on certain issues.
A native of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, Paul is a graduate of Gettysburg College and Duke University School of Medicine, where he earned his medical degree. He served as a medical officer in the United States Air Force from 1963 until 1968. He worked as an obstetrician-gynecologist from the 1960s to the 1980s, delivering more than 4,000 babies. He became the first Representative in history to serve concurrently with a child in the Senate when his son Rand Paul was elected to the United States Senate for Kentucky in 2010.
